We are now officially one week into the New Year. How are you doing with those goals you listed last week.
Hopefully, you are still holding onto your plans. Even if you aren’t doing as well as you wish, don’t give up! Unfortunately, some studies show that as many as 90% of goals will not be met. Often this occurs after not being able to keep plans. Examples could be that food was eaten that doesn’t fit the plan or a day of a workout was missed. After events like this, many feel it isn’t worth it to try again and fall back into the routines they are not happy with.
Why are only 10% of goals successful?
There are likely many variations of answers to this question. However, it appears that planning ahead of time is at the center of each suggestion. For anyone following Whole 30 diet, the key is not only having a supply of food that is Whole 30 approved but also cleaning the pantry of food that is not appropriate.
This mentality falls along the line of the 100% rule. This rule in goal setting considers it is all or nothing.
Think about it. Ninety-nine percent is a good intention but it wastes our time. At ninety-nine percent, we are using energy but not displaying results. As a consequence we let that New Year’s goal fall apart.
- Planning to stop online shopping: yet continuing to subscribe to all of the favored sites as well as keeping the apps on the phone.
- Changing to a healthier dietary lifestyle but keeping junk food “just in case” in the pantry.
- Developing a workout routine but not deciding what that will be.
- Writing a book or creating a blog or learning photography and not establishing a daily schedule.
Think about the plans that did not succeed in the past. Ninety-nine percent gives you permission to question. Should you go workout when it is cold? Do you have time to write? Do you have a list of ingredients for recipes. It is a struggle to keep goals if there isn’t a 100% commitment. A 100% commitment means the event is all or nothing and there is no room for questions.
Goals and intentions are achieved due to planning and consistency. Although there is a small percentage of individuals who may be able to have a cheat day on their new diet, most can not. A small percentage may allow skip days on writing and creating but typically those off days become longer and longer.
As we enter the second week of the year, know it is not too late to commit to your goals. However, you may need to step back and reconsider what is realistic. Desiring to focus upon too many goals pulls your energy and does not allow for 100% anywhere in your life.
Commitment is necessary in making changes.
Here are a few suggestions in developing commitment toward your goals.
- Explore what you want to give 100% of your attention. If there are questions, the likelihood is you will not be able to completely commit.
- Put in the effort. Desire to quit shopping? Unsubscribe from store’s emails. Want to write a book? Set aside time each day to write. Wanting to organize your house? Stop holding onto objects and clothes for that yard sale and take to a resale store or donate.
- Repeat over and over. Reaching and completing one goal establishes confidence. We are then able to focus upon a new area of our life that needs attention.
Putting 100% into anything can be daunting but will also be easier than that ninety-nine percent.
