People are often surprised to realize there are many different types of journal to keep.
A journal practice does not have to include only your written words and thoughts. Journals can include your calendar entries, travel logs, notes regarding your garden or house plans, favorite quotes or poems and lyrics from songs.
Many well know song writers share that they regularly keep journals with song lyrics and inspirational thoughts for songs. It’s also important to realize that the increasing technology of our smartphones has also established a journal basis in a different format.
Personally, I regularly keep a quote journal in written form and on my worth repeating page on Pinterest. These quotes can often form the inspiration and prompt for great journal writing prompts. When something makes you stop and save it for later, it is important to take the time to acknowledge why that statement meant something to you.
It is also important to realize that the same song lyric or quote can mean different things to each individual. This is the beauty of journal writing as each of us comes to the page with our own perspective. Again, there is never a right or wrong way to journal.
This week’s prompt is inspired by the line from the song “Unkiss Me” by Maroon 5: “You can’t light a fire if the candle’s melted.” What light’s your fire? What inspires you? What’s your passion?
Using the song lyric as an example, there have been moments in my career where I felt the candle had completed melted. I was going through the emotions but there was not spark left in what I was doing. I struggled with burnout and compassion fatigue. When I left my position as a grief counselor in 2013, I honestly felt I may never do that type of work again. However, I vividly recall the moment when I realized I truly missed the work. I still loved the work but didn’t love where I had been doing it.
I’m inspired by others who are willing to share their stories with me and the world. I’ve also realized over the past year of my life that I truly MUST be creative. I need to make and create whether it is this blog, or crafts or even cooking (that’s a totally new thing for me).
