Blogtember Day 6 prompt: Describe a distinct moment when your life took a turn.
The reality is that James and I
could should have met years before we did. The circle of friends we had in common was several and it was hard to believe that we had never come in contact with each other. (This is also where I state he dated a sorority sister and I dated one of his friends) In fact, our friend Katie (who I worked retail with during college) was always talking about “my friend James”.
Katie and I were meeting for a “catch up dinner” and as I was getting dressed my Mom stated. “Who knows who you might find tonight”.
I remember rolling my eyes. I was back in my hometown. It was summer time and I was meeting my girl friend for dinner. (Not too many people around and not much going on in my small college town).
James had stopped by to see Katie and we invited him along for dinner. The story goes I talked non-stop so much that he wondered if I was going to take a breath. The three of us had a great time and even took a walk on campus and swung on the swings at the playground attached to the campus elementary school. As we left Katie, James invited me out for a drink.
This is one of those instances where it felt like I had known him forever. (I obviously let him talk some) We discussed how he had moved to Kentucky from Florida and graduated a few years before me. He was living in another town and had returned to visit his parents for a few days after going to Michigan for a friend’s wedding. As we walked back to our cars, we both kept talking, not wanting the night to end. We discussed getting together again.
And then, (just like in a movie) a little bit of rain began to fall in that parking lot and he leaned over and kissed me. “I just had to.” I think we both knew instantly. We were two puzzle pieces that fit together.
I returned home that night knowing my life was changing. And to think that just hours before I had rolled my eyes at my Mom.
