One doesn’t have warning when an illness is going to hit.
As flu season has already hit Kentucky, I wanted to share this idea of creating a sick day box. In this box, you will gather items that you likely need when you become sick. This will become your emergency preparedness kit for when someone has an upset stomach, allergic reaction or flu and cold symptoms.
You will want to make a list of over the counter medications that are typically needed and consider the members of your family. Of course, the purpose is to purchase these items before anyone in your house is sick.
I feel it is important to separate the items and keep them in a box so that everyone in the family knows where the items are located. Additionally, it is easier to take note of when more medication is needed.
I purchased a variety of over the counter medication for our box. I also chose to purchase and place in our box items such as ginger ale, chicken noodle soup and gluten free macaroni and cheese. It’s horrible when you are sick and there is nothing in the house that you feel you can eat. By keeping the food items separate, you will be certain not to pull them out from the pantry and not have them when you need it.
Here is a list of the sick day box I have created for our house:
- Cold and Flu Relief Medication – day and nighttime
- Kleenex (so you know you will have some in the house)
- Cough Drops
- Chicken Noodle Soup
- Macaroni and Cheese
Other items to consider buying are cough syrup, Mucinex and saline spray.
I should note that after I purchased our items and before I could write this post, James and I both came down with colds and have used the cold and flu medication. If I hadn’t purchased it, we would have had to make a point to buy it when we were both feeling under the weather. It makes life easier to have these items handy.
If there are children in the home, you may want to create a children’s sick day box with children’s medication. This will enable you to inventory easier.
Do you think it would be a good idea to create a Sick Day Box for your family? What items do you plan to include?
